The mission of the Capital Quilters Guild is to encourage and promote the art of quilting through education and fellowship, while giving back to our community.
HISTORY: A group of quilters met in one of the Founding Mother's living room and discussed the need for a guild in the Concord area. Many were members of other guilds but wished to promote the craft locally. Over the next few months, this group met several times to establish by-laws, officers, meeting time, place, and program. The Capital Quilters Guild opened to everyone in September, 1995, and, at the end of the year, there were 152 members.
MEETINGS: Our meetings are usually held the second Tuesday of the month, we are meeting at:
Bow Mill Methodist Church 505 South Street, Bow NH.
Doors open at 6:30 pm for social time and the meeting begins at 7:00. Following the business meeting, there is a program that often features a speaker, demonstration, or project related to quilting. Refreshments (which are brought in by members) and members' show & tell about their finished quilting projects (sometimes the most informative and inspirational part of the meeting) complete the evening.
PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS: The program committee books speakers for our Monthly Tuesday Meetings and Saturday Workshops. Be sure to follow the schedule of events as Workshops can be scheduled prior to or after the regular Tuesday meeting dates. Lots of wonderful quilters, trunk shows, and techniques to teach our members are booked throughout the year.
RAFFLES: Raffle tickets are on sale for the displayed quilting items, and the drawing is held at the end of the meeting. Proceeds benefit the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell MA.
COMMUNITY QUILTS, PILLOW CASES and PLACEMATS: As individual members, we make quilts which we donate to various organizations that are given to people in need. Each year, we will making a quilt for a local non-profit to use for fundraising. We also make placemats that are donated to Meals-on-Wheels, and pillow cases that are given to children at Concord Hospital and nursing homes.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES: Each year, our Program Committee comes up with activities in which members can choose to participate. Examples include block-of-the-month, in which the pattern for a quilt block is provided each month so that by the end of the year, you have squares to make a quilt, and challenge quilts, in which you use specified fabrics/colors and follow specified rules to make a quilt. The fun of both of these activities is seeing how different, creative, and beautiful the quilts turn out.
QUILT SHOW: We put on a quilt show every other year (ending in an odd number). we are having it on April 28 and 29th, 2023. Members participate by submitting their quilts for viewing in the show, but are also required to volunteer in the planning, preparation, set up, staffing, and follow-up of the show.
OFFICERS & BOARD: Officers and board members' positions are filled in June in order to gear up for the September, our first meeting of each year. Let the President of CQG know if you would like to be on the board.
NEWSLETTER: The guild newsletter, Needle Notes, is the guild's primary membership communication tool. Rely on Needle Notes to see what is happening with the guild and plans for the next meeting.
